If we are powerless over our addictions, then what comes next? This is where the second Step 2 of the 12 step program comes in and gives those seeking sobriety an outlet for potential recovery. The second step aims to show someone battling addiction a way forward. It is worth mentioning that this step introduces a “higher power/higher self”. Some programs may use the terms God, him, power, higher self, the universe, or the like.  A "higher power” is anything external that inspires you to stay sober.  This power usually has a larger presence than an individual person. North Palm Beach Recovery Center strives to make the 12 step program one that is applicable to all secular and spiritual people.

A key concept to consider is what a higher power means. It does not necessarily have to mean a religious figure. This higher power can be any entity that is bigger than the individual. For some this could be nature, the universe, personal morals, or the NA group itself. The other key concept is restoring us to recovery. Step 2 of NA ensures the person working it that we can return to a healthy and rational state of being.

Applying Step 2 of NA

The first "sub-step" of step 2 is to identify what your higher power is. What or who can serve as your source of strength. For some of us this is Jesus or another religious deity. For others it is a spiritual belief or practice. Your higher power can be traditional or more of personal principles. It could be a religious figure or the NA group itself. Regardless of what the higher power is you will want to choose one. Once you have identified your higher power you can participate in NA meetings to share experiences and gain insights from other NA group members. When attending these meetings be sure to do so with an open mind and heart. Be willing to consider others ideas, perspectives, and higher powers. The members of the NA group can aid in your recovery and challenge previous beliefs that may no longer serve you.
