Getting Drunk & Addicted To Alcohol

How to Know If Someone Is Drunk

Early intervention and recognizing when someone is abusing alcohol is key to the first steps in treating alcoholism.

Common signs that somebody is intoxicated or misusing alcohol are:

  • Slurred Speech- Someone who is intoxicated may have slowed or slurred speech. When extremely intoxicated speech may be incoherent, or the person may be completely unresponsive.
  • Coordination - When someone is drunk, they may stumble or lack coordination.
  • Lack of Judgement - When intoxicated people lack the rationality and decision-making skills they usually have.
  • Odor of Alcohol -Alcohol is different than other drugs because the smell can give the alcohol abuse away. If there is a strong stench of alcohol that trails behind someone who is intoxicated, they have likely consumed a substantial amount of alcohol in a short period.
  • Mood swings - Alcohol can swing moods from one side of the spectrum to the other. From euphoria to sudden anger, alcohol seems to act as a depressant or a stimulant depending on the individual, the amount consumed, and the situation.

At first these signs may be unrecognizable but can quickly escalate.

Symptoms of Acohol Addiction

These symptoms affect daily life and commonly include:

  • Cravings: An addict will have an intense craving for alcohol and will not feel satisfied unless they are drinking.
  • An Increased Tolerance: Drinking more to achieve the same drunk. This is dangerous because alcohol poisoning and risk of addiction increase with the quantity consumed.
  • Inability To Quit: If alcohol has negatively affected the user's life and they are still unable to stop it is a clear indication that they are addicted. These negative effects could be in regard to work, home, physical health, and personal relationships.
  • Neglecting Responsibilities: Alcohol makes interacting with the world much harder, although the one who is intoxicated rarely feels that way, which leads to poor performance and neglected responsibilities. Many of times this can result in job loss, DUI's, injury, and other severe consequences.
  • Social Isolation: When someone is trapped by alcoholism it is common to withdrawal from friends and family. Alcoholics will do this to hide the addiction or spend more time with those who are also drinking.
  • Mood Swings: The cycles of euphoria and lethargy we mentioned above accompanies the highs and lows of being addicted to alcohol.

A successful recovery from fentanyl starts with recognizing the symptoms. If you or someone you know is addicted to fentanyl speak with one of our addiction specialist for a customized rehab program.

Withdrawing & Detoxing from Alcohol

Withdrawal from alcohol can be dangerous and requires medical supervision. Common symptoms of alcohol withdrawal include:

  • Tremors and Shaking: Known as "the shakes," these are among the most visible signs of withdrawal.
  • Anxiety and Restlessness: Individuals may experience extreme unease or irritability.
  • Nausea and Vomiting: Physical withdrawal symptoms often include digestive upset.
  • Sweating and Fever: The body may go through temperature fluctuations during detox.
  • Hallucinations: Severe withdrawal can lead to visual, auditory, or tactile hallucinations.
  • Seizures and Delirium Tremens (DTs): DTs are life-threatening and involve confusion, rapid heart rate, and agitation.

At NPB Recovery, we offer medically supervised detox programs to ensure your safety and comfort during this critical phase. Our team closely monitors clients, providing medication and therapeutic support as needed.
