Summary and how it applies to the 12 steps.

If we are powerless over our addictions, then what comes next? This is where the second Step 2 of the 12 step program comes in and gives those seeking sobriety an outlet for potential recovery. The second step aims to show someone battling addiction a way forward. It is worth mentioning that this step introduces a “higher power/higher self”.

Some programs may use the terms God, him, power, higher self, the universe, or the like.  A "higher power” is anything external that inspires you to stay sober.  This power usually has a larger presence than an individual person. North Palm Beach Recovery Center strives to make the 12 step program one that is applicable to all secular and spiritual people. Examples of a higher “power” include a religious God, the universe, or karma.  Some may choose the process of recovery itself. In the end, you get to decide what a “higher power” means to you.
